Photopainting: Two New Works

Just finished these two pieces. Interesting that they both started out as xrays. One obviously of a coupe kissing, the other, now abstracted, of a torso. To see more visit my website at:  www.nicksokoloff.com

Photopainting and Photography: The Interview

with one comment

I had the honor of being interviewed by Paige from her ever popular equine blog: The Equinest.  The Equinest runs  a regular artist interview and portfolio sampling, from some the best equine artists in the country. I had fun answering her questions, sharing some work and insights, and just being in the company of some great artists! Thanks again Paige! Here’s an excert and you can view the entire interview here.

“Who are your main influences?
My early influences were the great documentary photographers…Eugene Smith, Dorothea Lange, Robert Frank, Eugene Richards. Others include Joel Meyerowitz, Joyce Tenneson, Richard Avedon, Gordon Parks, Sally Mann, Man Ray. I am a huge fan of Keith Carter. Gordon Parks is probably the greatest renaissance man of the 20th century. I really admire photographers such as Meyerowitz who’s work goes everywhere from street photography to fine art.

Your work encompasses more than just horses, what is your favorite subject?
Tough question. I really enjoy different types of work for different reasons. Photographing horses however is truly sublime. Being outside in nature with gorgeous, powerful, muscular, fascinating, photogenic animals is really hard to beat. My other favorite subject is my five-year-old son.”

Equine Art Photopainting: Image of the Month

with one comment

From time-to-time I like to go back and rework old pictures. I shot this one some time back. Always liked the original image, but couldn’t make it work as an art piece. After letting it stew for about a year, I pulled it up and, wham…made one of my all time favorites. Maybe it’s time to take another peek through the archives. Equine meets Wedded Bliss: Take 2

leave a comment »

I had the good fortune to photograph with Rachel again in advance of her upcoming wedding at the Sundance Resort. The hike to this mountain location was a pleasure in itself, and the actual shoot locale was gorgeous. I love discovering new locations right in my own backyard and viewing two rather large moose from a safe distance was an added bonus. As usual Rachel was a great model and a trooper to boot. I love this set of pictures and these are just the tip of the iceberg!
