Equine Art acquired by the Ritz-Carlton, Vail.

I’m very excited to announce that a set of five of my equine photopaintings has been acquired by the new Ritz-Carlton in Vail, CO. Many thanks to all involved (especially Kate) for seeing this sale through. Here’s the press release from the art consulting company:

“Congratulations to Nick Sokoloff and Kate Dardine, whose images were chosen to be part of the new Ritz-Carlton Residences in Vail, Colorado. This order represents our largest so far, and consists of four original paintings, 120 fine art paper giclées and five large (33.5 x 53.5″) canvas giclées.

How did we get the order? Kate directed the consultant to the AFC gallery to find more work, and after considering a few images, Nick Sokoloff’s “Across the Plains” was chosen. This is a big opportunity for all of us – because this consultant works with large upscale hotels across the country. We are working hard to ensure that she is pleased with us in every way – and that we stay on her radar for upcoming projects!”

Photopainting and Photography: The Interview

with one comment

I had the honor of being interviewed by Paige from her ever popular equine blog: The Equinest.  The Equinest runs  a regular artist interview and portfolio sampling, from some the best equine artists in the country. I had fun answering her questions, sharing some work and insights, and just being in the company of some great artists! Thanks again Paige! Here’s an excert and you can view the entire interview here.

“Who are your main influences?
My early influences were the great documentary photographers…Eugene Smith, Dorothea Lange, Robert Frank, Eugene Richards. Others include Joel Meyerowitz, Joyce Tenneson, Richard Avedon, Gordon Parks, Sally Mann, Man Ray. I am a huge fan of Keith Carter. Gordon Parks is probably the greatest renaissance man of the 20th century. I really admire photographers such as Meyerowitz who’s work goes everywhere from street photography to fine art.

Your work encompasses more than just horses, what is your favorite subject?
Tough question. I really enjoy different types of work for different reasons. Photographing horses however is truly sublime. Being outside in nature with gorgeous, powerful, muscular, fascinating, photogenic animals is really hard to beat. My other favorite subject is my five-year-old son.”

Equine Art Photopainting: Image of the Month

with one comment

From time-to-time I like to go back and rework old pictures. I shot this one some time back. Always liked the original image, but couldn’t make it work as an art piece. After letting it stew for about a year, I pulled it up and, wham…made one of my all time favorites. Maybe it’s time to take another peek through the archives.
